How to keep long hair from breaking and getting split ends?

My hair is almost to my butt and I go get my hair trimmed every 6 weeks like im told and it still doesnt help. I dont blow dry my hair nor do I put products in it with the exception of a cream to maintain my "fly aways" from BREAKAGE. Any Idea's?
